Can I Open a Prebiotic Capsule?

It is completely fine to open your prebiotic capsules if you would prefer to administer the contents directly into the mouth or mix them into cool, non-acidic food and drink.

We recommend either taking the required dose of capsules with a glass of water, or opening the contents into shakes, cereals, and smoothies.

Gut supplements often contain live bacteria that can be sensitive to damage from certain conditions, especially hot or acidic environments.

This often leads people to believe that the live bacteria strains in supplements will not survive their journey through our body and into our acidic stomachs. This is often why many probiotic supplements use a special coating on their tablets to ensure they survive these conditions.

However, Performance Lab Prebiotic is robust enough to survive this journey without a special coating on the capsules.

This is why we recommend taking the capsules in the morning with breakfast, as this is when the stomach acid is at its weakest, thus presenting less of a challenge for our healthy strains of bacteria!

This means that it is safe to open the capsules into a food or drink of your choice, provided that it is cold and not too acidic (such as fruit juice).

What Are the Benefits of Prebiotics?

Prebiotics are plant fibers that help the healthy bacteria in our gut grow and develop, ensuring our digestive system functions optimally.

Both probiotics and prebiotics help your gut, though in different ways.

While prebiotics are a source of food for your gut bacteria, probiotics are additional live bacteria that you add to your gut, essentially increasing its population.

There are benefits to both, however, probiotics are unpredictable and fragile. This means that you may not be taking in the number of bacteria it states on the product, and you run the risk of over-populating your gut microbiome, which could lead to further gut issues.

Prebiotics tend to be a better choice as they aim to nourish your existing bacteria, delivering a more reliable, natural, and comfortable microbiome support.

Additionally, the fiber content of prebiotics can further support digestion, immunity, and fat loss, which are benefits you don’t get from probiotics.

Some of the key benefits of supplementing with prebiotics include:

  • Supporting digestive regularity, gut comfort, and nutrient absorption
  • Promoting a healthy immune system (about 70% of the immune system is located in the gut!)
  • Nourishing existing bacteria
  • Helping fat loss by controlling appetite
  • Supporting bone health by enhancing calcium absorption
  • Helping to regulate bad cholesterol absorption

The Take-Home Message

While Performance Lab Prebiotic capsules are generally formulated for easy swallowing, we understand that sometimes it’s preferable to administer supplements more easily.

The good news is that considering our prebiotic supplement contains live bacteria, it is still suitable for opening into cold, non-acidic food and drinks.

Performance Lab Prebiotic is a 2-in-1 upgrade over probiotics as it feeds existing bacteria while contributing to ideal fiber intake, further supporting the gut microbiome.

We recommend taking 3 capsules with your first meal of the day, and a further 3 capsules with your following meal, for optimal digestive support.

Remember to drink plenty of fluids (half a pint) with each serving!
